Biography

Judy Xie is a guest researcher in the Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions Research Group and an intern in the Sustainable Service Systems Research Group of the Energy, Climate, and Environment Program. She is also a PhD candidate at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London, UK. Her research focuses on modeling different dimensions of the just transition away from fossil fuels, including the procedural dynamics, barriers and enablers, and distributional employment impacts. Her work at IIASA investigates the drivers for coal and gas phase out and explores more socio-politically feasible narratives in different scenarios. Xie joined IIASA as part of the 2023 Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) and continued working with the institute since then.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US, which she acquired in 2019. In the past, she has worked as a chemist at a Direct Air Capture (DAC) start-up company in the US, and researched biomass conversion in the Catalytic Process Engineering Group at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.
