Biography
Dr. Gui-Ying Cao joined IIASA in 1998. Currently a Senior Research Scholar with IIASA’s Council and External Relations Department and its Advanced Systems Analysis Program, she also held research positions with IIASA’s Forestry Program (2005–2011) and World Population Program (1998–2005). As principal investigator and/or coordinator, she has led a great number of multidisciplinary research projects at IIASA. She has also played an established role in fostering IIASA’s network with Chinese institutions and scientists.Dr. Cao is an Adjunct Professor at Peking University and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Shanghai Climate Research Center. Dr. Cao served as a member of the UN Committee for Development Policy (2004–2009), having been appointed by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
Prior to joining IIASA, Dr. Cao held positions at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare of China, the Population Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the National Bank of China, and the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women in Vienna.
Dr. Cao received her PhD in sociology from the Department of Economics of the University of Vienna. She completed her economics studies at Tianjin University, China, and her demography studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Her scientific interests focus on human resources (labor, migration, urbanization) and their interaction with agro-ecological changes and environment along with the economic and demographic transitions.
Dr. Cao has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in English, Chinese, and German and has been a principal author or co-author for important reports at both the national and international levels of governance.
