Biography
Gary Watmough is a guest research scholar in the Novel Data Ecosystems for Sustainability Research Group of the IIASA Advancing Systems Analysis Program. His research is focused on developing methods for using satellite imagery to map and monitor aspects of poverty, deprivation, and inequality and how this can be used for monitoring development assistance and supporting the targeting of resources for humanitarian assistance.Watmough’s research supports the UN’s call for a data revolution in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help monitor progress and contribute to geographic targeting of scarce resources. The majority of projects he has worked on recently have been co-designed with UN agencies. They are directly dealing with gaps in knowledge, providing required outputs for practitioners as well as furthering scientific knowledge.
He is presently a senior lecturer at the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh.
