Biography

Flora Brocza-Pflügl first joined IIASA as part of the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) in 2021. Currently, she is a research scholar in the Pollution Management (PM) Research Group of the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program. Working with the GAINS model, she focuses on the modeling of greenhouse gases CH4 and N2O, as well as F-gases. As part of this work, she coordinates the PM Research Group’s contributions to the European Commission’s Reference Scenario 2025, a benchmark scenario to assess future policy changes.

Brocza-Pflugl also serves on the Technical Expert Roster of the Open-Ended Science Group of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, having previously focused on incorporating technologies to abate the pollutant mercury into the GAINS model.

In 2024, she completed her PhD with the School of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Leeds, UK, where she researched anthropogenic mercury emissions and emission abatement measures in technical and policy contexts. Prior to joining IIASA, she completed bachelor’s and a master’s degrees in geosciences at the University of Vienna, Austria, with exchange and research visits to the Universities of Belgrade, Serbia, and Haskoli Islands, Iceland. She also holds a master’s degree in bioenergy from the University of Leeds.
