Biography
Enrico Confienza joined IIASA in 2018 as the project manager for the RESTORE+ initiative, a multi-partner research project focused on land use planning and sustainable development in tropical regions, which has recently been renewed until 2028 with a refined scope for its second phase, emphasizing policy-relevant outputs and stakeholder engagement.Since 2019, Confienza has also served as program and project officer for the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services (AFE) Research Group. In this capacity, he supports the strategic coordination and the operational and financial management of AFE, contributing to research initiatives at the intersection of land use, climate change, and sustainable development.
Prior to joining IIASA, he worked as a consultant for European Union-funded projects, promoting the design and implementation of projects that focus on sustainability in urban areas and Interreg initiatives. He also consolidated his experience working several years in Corporate Real Estate Management, where he led complex assessments, development projects, technical audits, and due diligence processes for mergers and acquisitions.
Confienza is a registered architect and holds a PhD in regional planning and local development from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, with a research focus on urban development models. He also served as an assistant researcher, contributing to environmental assessments and academic teaching in the fields of urban and theory of planning.
