Biography
Donghyun Kim joined IIASA’s Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program in October 2012, as a research scholar financed by the Korean Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in cooperation with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). Dr. Kim is an expert in forest and wild land fire research and holds 15 patents for forest fire suppression and management systems, some of which are being used in South Korea as well as a number of other countries. His research carried out with ESM is contributing to the development of a fire weather index at national/regional level for Korea with an envisaged link to a global forest fire early warning system.Dr. Kim has been working at KFRI, South Korea since 2003, where he has focused on developing solutions for forest fire protection and management. He has built up a network of international collaboration partners on forest fire research with focus on the University of Coimbra, Portugal and Kyoto University, Japan.
Dr. Kim received his PhD in forest fire and disaster management from the Kyoto University in Kyoto, Japan, in 2009. His PhD work focused on developing a prediction model for the spread of fire, based on numerical analysis.
