Biography
Dan Fiscus is a guest senior research scholar in the Systemic Risk and Resilience Research Group of the IIASA Advancing Systems Analysis Program. He is an ecologist, independent researcher, and R&D scientist in ultrasound and artificial intelligence.He developed Excelsior University graduate sustainability courses (2022) and was assistant professor in Biology (2007-2012) and Sustainability Liaison (2012-2016) at Frostburg State University, Maryland, USA.
He authored or coauthored over 20 scientific articles in soil ecology, ecosystem ecology, and sustainability, as well as coauthored two books: Flourishing Within Limits to Growth: Following Nature’s Way? (2015) and Foundations for Sustainability: A Coherent Framework of Life-environment Relations (2019).
As co-founder of the Western Maryland Food Council he conducted food system research and community development.
His current research and action focus on solutions for and navigating the global social-ecological multi-crisis, including design and construction of a sustainable science facility; examination and reform of the mainstream mechanistic science paradigm; educational curricula for the emerging holistic, organic, living system science paradigm; and fostering dialogue among communities with diverse Life-Environment perspectives such as indigenous people and space exploration groups.
