Biography

Andre (Mahdi) Nakhavali joined the Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program in 2022. His main area of research is the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as their interconnectedness with biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Nakhavali specializes in terrestrial carbon and nutrient dynamics. He previously developed an extension to the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES), which includes the representation of processes related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil, its transport out of the soil into river systems (JULES-DOCM), representation of nitrogen leaching (JULES-CN), and the terrestrial phosphorus cycle (JULES-CNP). He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Exeter in the UK.
