Biography
Andre (Mahdi) Nakhavali is a Research Scholar in the Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program, which he joined in 2022. His research focuses on forest-based climate change mitigation and adaptation, with particular emphasis on forest carbon dynamics, sustainable forest management, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. He specializes in terrestrial ecosystem modeling, biogeochemistry, and carbon and nutrient cycling. At IIASA, his work contributes to integrated assessments of land-use and forest-sector pathways, supporting the evaluation of climate-resilient and sustainable forest management strategies under future socio-economic and climate scenarios.
Prior to joining IIASA, Nakhavali developed extensions to the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES), including representations of dissolved organic carbon dynamics and transport, nitrogen leaching, and the terrestrial phosphorus cycle. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Exeter, UK.
