Biography
Adrian Dwiputra is a Research Scholar in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program. He is an Indonesian landscape ecologist working on the EPISTEM project. His research focuses on unveiling the wondrous spatial ecology of Southeast Asia in data-scarce contexts, while trying to imagine effective ways of conserving biodiversity. He first joined IIASA as a Young Scientist Summer Program (YSSP) fellow in 2023, under the supervision of Ping Yowargana and Andrey Krasovskiy. In addition to his role at IIASA, he is currently a PhD student at the National University of Singapore Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions (NUS CNCS), planning to defend his PhD dissertation titled, Mapping Forest Recovery Potential in Southeast Asia, in November 2026.
In addition to actively researching ecosystem recovery opportunities across the region, he also investigates the constraints of natural ecosystem recovery coming from complex socio-ecological hazards, such as fires. He has been continuously learning different analytical techniques throughout his work: statistics, machine learning, spatial systems analysis, remote sensing, and their combinations. During his PhD journey, he also took a few opportunities to support young professionals inside and outside academia. For example, he acted as the Young Professional Regional Focal Point for Asia in the global network of The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, as well as a NUS Graduate Peer Student Supporter.
He believes land systems science has the potential to help reshape landscapes and allocate more space for biodiversity.
