The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 by the United Nations is a global response seeking to reconcile human development with planetary boundaries. The current COVID-19 pandemic has significantly set back efforts toward SDG achievement, and there is an urgent need to both step up the pace of progress if these goals are to be achieved by 2030, and to take substantial additional actions to strengthen needed transformations beyond 2030.

IIASA Director General Dr. Albert van Jaarsveld will join policymakers, national science funders, foundations, development aid agencies and international science institutions at an official side event at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2021 to present a roadmap highlighting how to scale up the impact of science in advancing this urgent, transformative agenda globally.

The side event: Unleashing Science: Delivering Missions for Sustainability is coordinated by the International Science Council. Van Jaarsveld, alongside fellow panelists Maria Uhle, Co-Chair, Belmont Forum, AnnaMaria Oltorp, Head of Research Cooperation, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Peter Gluckman, President-elect, the International Science Council, and Ingrid Petersson, Director General of Formas, Swedish Research Council, will present: A Framework to Unleash Mission-Oriented Science, outlining the critical priorities for science that will support and enable societies to accomplish the SDGs by 2030.

This will be a virtual event, please register to attend.

HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM 2021

The high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF) is the core United Nations platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The HLPF 2020 will discuss ways to ensure a sustainable and resilient recovery from COVID-19 that puts us on track to realize the 2030 Agenda. The theme will be: Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development. Ministers and other participants will be able to explore various aspects of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts. They will discuss the kind of policies and international cooperation that can control the pandemic and its impacts and put the world back on track to achieve the SDGs by 2030, within the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.
