Biography
Martin Jung is a senior research scholar in the Biodiversity, Ecology, and Conservation (BEC) Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program. His current research focusses broadly on nexus topics of land-use, socioeconomic management practices, and biodiversity indicators as well as investigating cost-effective solutions for robust monitoring and conservation planning solutions for species and ecosystems.
Before joining IIASA in 2019, Jung completed a PhD at the University of Sussex in the UK, where he focused on quantifying the impacts of land change on global biodiversity by combining remote sensing time series and large databases of local biodiversity data. Prior to that he obtained an MSc from the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and a BSc from the University of Marburg in Germany, both with an explicit focus on the impacts of anthropogenic pressures on biodiversity.
Jung is a fellow ofthe Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Nexus Assessment, recipient of the 2023 Early Career Conservation Award of the Society for Conservation Biology, associate editor of the journal Diversity and Distributions, and is currently co-supervising a number of PhD students in the UK and Finland. Besides science, he enjoys cooking, hiking, playing badminton, and occasionally running long-distance competitions.
