Biography

JoAnne Linnerooth-Bayer focuses on global change with particular interest in the risk of extreme events, nature-based solutions (NBS) for their mitigation, insurance for transferring risk, and participatory processes for inclusive stakeholder engagement. She and her colleagues have designed and tested novel stakeholder co-design techniques, as well as developed policy options to support risk reduction, risk transfer, and other forms of pro-active disaster risk management.

Trained in engineering and economics (Carnegie-Mellon University, University of Maryland), her interdisciplinary work includes understanding multiple perspectives (plural rationalities) on climate change and other global policy issues, particularly as they relate to policy interventions that are considered equitable and legitimate.

Linnerooth-Bayer has over 100 journal publications and consultancy reports, including articles in Nature Climate Change, Science, and PNAS. She is a founding member of the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative as well as the Austrian Climate Research Program. She serves on numerous professional committees and editorial boards, including the IDRiM Journal and the Journal of Economics of Disasters and Climate Change. She has served as Lead Author and Review Editor on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events (SREX) and the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, respectively. She is also a coordinating lead author on the chapter, Pathways to Systemic Risk Governance, of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Global Assessment Report 2020.
