Guest Research Scholar

Exploratory Modeling of Human-natural Systems Research Group

Advancing Systems Analysis Program

Biography

Professor Gustav Feichtinger worked at IIASA from 1992 - 2004 (part time) on population problems. He re-joined IIASA in 2015 as a guest senior research scholar of the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) Program.

Professor Feichtinger studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Vienna. He holds a PhD in Mathematics (1963, Dissertation in Group Theory). After a research position at the IBM Laboratory Vienna he moved to the University of Bonn (1965 – 1972), where he was Assistant and Associate Professor of Statistics (Habilitation in Statistics and Demography). In 1972, he was appointed to Full Professor for Operations Research at the Vienna University of Technology (Faculty of Mathematics: Professor emeritus since 2008). Since 1977, he has been Research Group Leader for Formal (later: Economic) Demography at the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2001, he was elected as corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 2007, he holds an Honorary Doctorate of the Faculty for Economics of the University of Magdeburg.

His research interests are as follows:
• Applications of optimal control theory and dynamic games in economics and OR
• Nonlinear dynamic modelling of socio-economic processes
• Economics of 'deviant behavior': addiction, corruption, violence, terrorism
• Dynamic cost-benefit analysis in public policy, epidemiology (illicit drug dynamics, HIV)
• Demography, population mathematics and economics
• Health economics and disease control
• Social interactions, peer groups and networks.
