IIASA Deputy Director General for Science Leena Srivastava and several other IIASA researchers are contributing to a range of activities at the conference and are organizing a side event looking at strengthening synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The side event will serve to introduce the IIASA Transformations within Reach Initiative and its focus on improving societal decision making in this context.

The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the Paris Agreement are two of the most ambitious international agreements aimed at ensuring wellbeing for all within biophysical limits. The Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will focus on how the integrated and synergistic implementation of both would yield many benefits and reveal possible conflicts, considerably enhancing the effectiveness and quality of outcomes.

IIASA Emeritus Research Scholar Luis Gomez-Echeverri is organizing and moderating the side event titled, Transformations within Reach, hosted by the Technical Advisory Group of the UN on SDG 7. Research indicates that access to clean and affordable energy is constrained by political feasibility rather than technical constraints. The panelists at this session, which will include Srivastava and Transformations within Reach project lead, Elena Rovenskaya, will introduce the Transformations within Reach Initiative’s focus on improving societal decision making in this context.

The conference will have a network of knowledge partners that contributes to codification and dissemination of knowledge on climate and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) synergies using the Climate & SDGs Synergies Knowledge Platform. It is intended to inform deliberations and galvanize action ahead of major 2022 global processes.
