New project studies established in Indian regions

The Water (WAT) Program and Indian partners organized workshops in 2013 to share knowledge and help establish a new research project in Gujarat, Bundelkhand, and Kerala, India.

The research questions in this study being addressed in a new project "Sustaining and Improving Rural Livelihood through Adaptive Approaches to Land, Soil Nutrient, and Water Management" are:

1) What scientifically supported options are available for improving livelihoods in a sustainable way under an uncertain future, which is severely impacted by climate change and socio-economic trends, and

2) Which of these options or combinations of options can produce desirable outcomes under the priorities of stakeholders in different regions and widely differing biophysical and social settings?

The project addresses these questions through conducting project studies in three different regions of India:

  • rural development and livelihoods in Gujarat;
  • water resources management and livelihoods in Bundelkhand; and
  • soil nutrient management and livelihoods in Kerala.

The case studies will evaluate livelihood resources and conditioning factors, and the impacts and management options related to these factors.

Climate change, future development, and land use changes will be addressed in all three geographical case studies according to a common approach. The project will link its assessment of options, methods, and scenarios with the flagship program at IIASA, Water Futures and Solutions (WFaS).

In 2013, IIASA and the Indian partners organized workshops to share knowledge and help establish the study cluster.
