Chulalongkorn University (CHULA) Council has awarded IIASA World Population Program (POP) Director Wolfgang Lutz a Honorary Doctoral Degree in Liberal Arts (Honoris Causa) as proposed by the College of Population Studies (CPS) at Chula, for his profound contribution to the progress of human society and academic research.

Lutz is already the second IIASA researcher to receive this honor. In 2019 senior researcher Sergei Scherbov received an honorary doctoral degree in recognition of his knowledge and expertise in Population Studies and the outstanding contribution he has made in the field. In 2016 Lutz and Scherbov were honored at Chula for their contribution to research and capacity building at the CPS.

POP at IIASA and the CPS have a long tradition of collaboration particularly in the research fields of aging and climate change adaptation with a focus on Asia. Beside annual “hands on” courses in the field of demographic analysis, POP and CPS collaborated in the production of Asian Demographic Data Sheets, and in  field studies to research on societies' adaptive capacity to climate change, and co-organized high level international conferences, one themed "Measuring population ageing: Bridging research and policy" in 2019, and one titled "Demographic Differential Vulnerability to Natural Disasters in the Context of Climate Change Adaptation" in 2014, where Lutz was always actively involved. Lutz and Scherbov have been frequently invited speakers at Chulalongkorn University on multiple occasions, including at the 50th anniversary celebration of the CPS at Chula.

Lutz is author and editor of 28 books and more than 250 refereed articles, including seven in "Science" and "Nature". In 2008 and 2017 he received ERC Advanced Grants, in 2009 the Mattei Dogan Award of the IUSSP, and in 2010 the Wittgenstein Prize. With the latter he founded the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, a collaboration between IIASA, the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Vienna. He further received the Mindel C. Sheps Award of the Population Association of America (PAA) and the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) Award for his groundbreaking contributions to the study of populations in 2016.

He is elected full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and of the German National Academy Leopoldina as well as a member of the Committee on Population of the US National Academy of Sciences. Furthermore he is a member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters (Societas Scientiarum Fennica), the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and the Academia Europaea. He is also member of an independent group of scientists to draft UN Global Sustainability Development Report, appointed by former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
