Book launch: World Population and Human Capital in the 21st Century

Hosted by the Wilson Centre, this event introduces the results of the latest population projections from IIASA's the World Population Program and the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Human Capital (IIASA, VID/ÖAW, WU). Entitled “World Population and Human Capital in the 21st Century” (eds. W. Lutz, W. Butz and Samir KC) it is a massive volume with 1056 pages including projection results for all countries in the world by age, sex and level of education. It is currently likely the most comprehensive assessment of the global state of knowledge about future population and human capital trends.

This event will provide the opportunity to meet two editors, Wolfgang Lutz and William P. Butz, and includes guest speakers Jason Bremner, Program Director of Population, Health, and Environment, Population Reference Bureau, and Scott Radloff, Senior Scientist and Director, PMA2020, Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health. It will be hosted by Roger-Mark De Souza, Director of Population, Environmental Security and Resilience, Wilson Center.

Background

This book summarizes our efforts over the last three years based on a major new assessment of what we know about likely drivers of future fertility, mortality, migration and education in different parts of the world. This information has been collected through an online questionnaire which was answered by more than 500 international population experts, through five so-called “Meta Expert” meetings on five continents as well as through substantive background chapters produced by over 70 lead authors and contributing authors. Through blending this substantive knowledge with statistical models alternative scenarios were defined and projection results by age, sex and six levels of educational attainment are presented for all countries. The book also introduces the demographic dimensions of the SSPs (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) which represent the new generation of IPCC related scenarios that are likely to become the main reference for population and climate change in the coming years.
