Invited by Former Austrian Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel and the Foreign Policy and United Nations Association of Austria (UNA-AUSTRIA), Sergei Scherbov will give a lecture in the framework of their weekly "International Club" about new measures of aging that were developed at IIASA. Scherbov is a distinguished expert in the fields of demographic modelling, population projections, data processing and presentation, and measuring aging.
For many years, Scherbov has conducted research in the field of aging and developed new measures of age and aging together with colleagues. He was principal investigator of the Reassessing Ageing from a Population Perspective (Re-Ageing) project at the World Population Program at IIASA that, among other things, ascertained the extent to which advanced societies are actually aging in multiple dimensions, including health, cognitive abilities, and longevity.
The results of this project were compiled in a new book entitled "Prospective longevity: A new vision of population aging" that he wrote together with Warren Sanderson and that was published in November 2019 with Harvard University Press. Scherbov is also the IIASA partners in Ageing Trajectories of Health: Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies (ATHLOS) project, that aims to achieve a better understanding of ageing by identifying patterns of healthy ageing pathways or trajectories and their determinants, the critical points in time when changes in trajectories are produced, and to propose timely clinical and public health interventions. The new measures of aging were comprehensively presented for all countries in the world and world regions in the Aging Demographic Data Sheet 2020.

Age and aging in the world
When we look at the future of aging in the world in a traditional way the picture is alarming and gloomy. Grey tsunami refers to the large wave of baby-boomers who have now started to reach age 65 and beyond, and population projections promise a steady continuation of aging populations. Is the fear of aging societies justified?
In this lecture we will discuss how aging in the world and its regions will look if we use traditional measures of age and aging that are based only on chronological age, and if we apply new measures of aging that are based on characteristics of people. Using measures of age and aging based on people’s characteristics provide a very different picture of the future.
The discussion will be based on information from the Aging Demographic Data Sheet 2020 that was recently prepared at the World Population Program at IIASA.
