Supplying Non-food Biomass in Europe (S2Biom)

The S2Biom project will facilitate the sustainable supply of non-food biomass at the local, regional, and pan-European levels.

Overview

In 2012, the European Commission stated that: "In order to cope with an increasing global population, rapid depletion of many resources, increasing environmental pressures and climate change, Europe needs to radically change its approach to production, consumption, processing, storage, recycling and disposal of biological resources." The S2Biom project supports this objective by developing research tools and identifying a roadmap for Europe to make more efficient use of the continent's biomass resources.

Partners and Themes

The European Commission funds the S2Biom project, which is made up of a consortium of 31 project partners from Europe, western Balkans, Ukraine and Turkey.

The project activities are divided into three interrelated themes:

  1. The first theme focuses on methodological approaches, data collection and estimation of sustainable biomass potentials, resource efficient pathways and optimal logistical supply routes as well as developing a computerized tool set.
  2. The second theme uses the findings from Theme 1 to develop a vision, strategies and an R&D roadmap for the sustainable delivery of non-food biomass feedstock at local, regional and pan- European level.
  3. The final theme will validate the findings from Themes 1 and 2 and disseminate the project's results.

IIASA Research

Researchers from IIASA's Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) program will further develop the BeWhere model for the project so that it covers each European country and includes all non food feedstock  for energy purposes. BeWhere is a techno-economic model that determines the optimal size and geographic distribution of bioenergy production plants.
