Science and policy must work together to achieve a sustainable future for humanity.
Dr. Katya Perez Guzman is currently a Research Scholar with the IIASA Ecosystems Services and Management program (ESM) where she supports the FABLE project, the main aim of which is to promote adequate analytical modeling tools that are rigorous and integrated across various knowledge domains relevant for Food Systems and Land Use public policy. Under FABLE, she acts as the focal point for Mexico, is part of the FABLE Secretariat and supports various activities during the Scenathons as well as for the improvement of the FABLE Calculator.
Dr. Perez Guzman's main interest is to develop and promote quantitative scientific instruments to inform public policy on climate change in Mexico. It was with this objective that she worked in civil society and the governmental sector of Mexico for ten years. This experience of environmental advocacy was complemented by nine years of research experience, starting with a Master's Degree in Complex Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics at the UACM, where Dr. Perez Guzman specialized in the analysis of complex networks, followed by PhD studies at FLACSO, Mexico, focusing on the analysis of the implications of oil production and exports on a country's carbon intensity, a proposed "carbon curse". Most recently, she finalized a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the IIASA Advanced Systems Analysis Program (ASA), where she quantified global extractivism with a network analysis of input-output tables.
