Planning for collaboration in Sochi

The Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Arctic Futures Initiative co-organized a workshop on “Interdisciplinary scientific collaboration towards sustainable Arctic” on 21 July 2016. The workshop was organized in connection to the International Conference “Data Intensive System Analysis for Geohazard Studies” (http://sochi2016.gcras.ru/) that took place in the Sochi Mountain cluster 18-21 July 2016.

The conference included two sessions on the Arctic, with oral presentations by Dr. Alexander Klepikov (Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, AARI), Dr. Alexander Gelfan (Water Problems Institute, WPI RAS), Dr. Sergey Sokratov (Lomonosov Moscow State University, MSU), Prof. Leopold Lobkovsky (Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RASA, IO RAS), Dr. Hanna K. Lappalainen (University of Helsinki, Finland), Prof. Valery Vernikovsky (Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB of RAS, IPGG SB RAS), Dr. Anni Reissell (IIASA), Prof. Vasily Bogoyavlensky (Oil and Gas Research Institute of RAS, OGRI RAS), and Dr. Vladimir Ivanov (HydrometCenter of Russia). In addition, there were a number of poster presentations on different aspects of the Arctic environment.

The aim of the Arctic workshop with some 30 participants was input from Russia to the AFI science agenda. Dr. Renata Lukianova from GC RAS and Dr. Anni Reissell from IIASA AFI co-chaired the event that included presentations and round-table discussion on communication of collaboration with different public research bodies and bringing together communities from scientific disciplines (natural and social sciences, humanities, law), policy and business.

During the workshop, brief presentations were given by Dr. Klepikov on AMAP Overview, Dr. Vladimir Kostsov(St. Petersburg State University, SPSU) on Monitoring and Modeling of Essential Atmospheric Parameters in the Subarctic Region, Prof. Bogoyavlensky on Gas and Oil Exploration in the Arctic, Alexander Gelfan (WPI RAS) on ISIMIP Project Overview, and Mr. Matvey Shparo (Deputy Director of the Adventure Club) on the travel activity at the Borneo Ice Station in the Central Arctic.

During a lively round-table discussion the participants tried to identify current obstacles and problems in bringing together disciplines and communities, to coordinate current activity and to realize their possible contribution to the international and interdisciplinary initiatives.

In conclusion, the conference and workshop initiated significant contributions to AFI: 1) several Russian institutes and scientific teams will take part; 2) AFI will work with Russian scientific communities to build bridges for interdisciplinary work on the Arctic; 3) planning of initiatives for joint studies engaging different disciplines, already some progress in Russia on joint work by social and environmental sciences; 4) key contact people from Russian institutes to AFI; 5) personal efforts and connections are crucial for collaboration.
