Asjad Naqvi

Asjad Naqvi’s research at IIASA focuses on using multi-dimensional agent-based models to analyze impact of natural disaster and conflict shocks on regional economies. The aim of this research is to identify mechanisms through which shocks spread in a complex non-linear environment and build risk measures to assess the impact of these shocks. Asjad is currently collaboration with the Internal Displacement Monitoring Cell (IDMC) on using such a tool to assess impacts of internal displacement on case countries.

Asjad is also extending his original agent-based modeling framework, SHELscape, that allows for simulating population and goods movements post natural disasters and their impacts on income and consumption vulnerabilities.

Asjad received his PhD in Economics from the New School for Social Research, USA in 2012 with a focus on areas of natural disasters, risk, migration networks, institutional structures, and household level decision-making processes. He has worked at the Center for Economic Research Pakistan (CERP) where he did research on earthquake and flood affected areas in Pakistan, and recently also at the Institute for Ecological Economics at the Vienna University of Economics of Business (WU), where he worked on issues related to growth, climate change and inequality. Previously, he collaborated on projects in the fields of development, migration, institutions, and economic history with the World Bank, Harvard Kennedy School, MIT, University of Chicago, University of Sussex, and the University of London.
