The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an independent, international research institute with National Member Organizations in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

Through its research programs and initiatives, the institute conducts policy-oriented research into issues that are too large or complex to be solved by a single country or academic discipline. This includes pressing concerns that affect the future of all of humanity, such as climate change, energy security, population aging, and sustainable development.

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is one of the major funding agency of science in China. It is responsible for directing, coordinating and making effective use of the National Natural Science Fund to fulfill its mission of supporting basic research, fostering talented researchers, developing international cooperation and promoting socioeconomic development. NSFC is widely respected as China’s most transparent research funder and has a rigorous two-stage merit-review system that includes postal peer review and panel review. Application processes run by NSFC are open to researchers from any university or research institute in China and every year over 1,500 organizations receive NSFC funding.

NSFC is located in Beijing, the capital city of the People's Republic of China. It was set up in 1986 and was directly under the jurisdiction of the State Council upon its establishment. In 2018, it became managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) but has been keeping its due independence in operation. NSFC has an annual budget of 35.1 billion RMB ($5.4 billion) in FY 2020.

The urge to support researchers and scientists has always been of prime importance to Iran's policy makers. This purpose had been served for many years by Scientific Research Council led by the first Vice President. In 2003, Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) was founded with the approval of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, as a governmental non-profit organization.

For more than a decade, INSF has taken concerted actions to provide support to researchers and scientists, and today we work closely with more than 35.000 faculty members from numerous universities and research institutes across the country.

Japan established the Japan Committee for IIASA at the same time that the IIASA was founded in 1972. Currently, Professor Kazuhiko TAKEUCHI, President, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies/ Project Professor, Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI), The University of Tokyo, is the Chair of the Japan Committee for IIASA. Dr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, who is President, the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center (OECC)/ Project Professor, Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI), The University of Tokyo, serves as a Council Member of IIASA representing Japan. The Japan Committee for IIASA is made up of a total of 8 committee members.
