IIASA progresses negotiations about membership with Vietnam and Italy

Representatives from Vietnam and Italy have been involved in recent discussions on collaborating further with IIASA.

On 16 January IIASA Director & CEO, Prof. Pavel Kabat and his special advisor Mr Chin-Min Lee, visited Hanoi, Vietnam to meet with the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen TheinNhan and senior officials of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

During his travels in Vietnam, Kabat met with VAST Vice President Nguyen Dinh Cong, and representatives of VAST’s research institutes. In addition Kabat also met with Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha, and Mekong River Basin Development Promotion Director Nguyen AnhDuc.An agreement has been reached and Vietnam will apply for membership before the end of February 2013.

More recently, positive discussions were had with the Italian Minister of Science Francesco Profumo and the leaders of the ISI Foundation, Institute for Scientific Interchange and the Italian National Research Council (CNR), when Kabat visited Rome on 24 January. As a follow-up, officials from the ministry and senior institute staff will visit IIASA in the next few weeks.

Progress has also been made with a number of other countries, specifically discussions are ongoing with scientific leaders in the UK. Prof. Pavel Kabat and IIASA Deputy Director Nebojsa Nakicenovic will participate in several upcoming events in London.
