IIASA Director and CEO presents water project in Korea

On 14 January, IIASA Director and CEO Prof. Dr. Pavel Kabat presented the new Global Water Futures: World Water Scenarios Project in Seoul. Korea is a partner in the project, which brings together scientists and decision makers to develop realistic scenarios for water challenges worldwide.

The World Water Scenarios Project is a partnership between IIASA, UNESCO, the Korean government, the World Water Council and the International Water Association. It aims to provide a scientific basis for responding to worldwide water challenges by creating and testing a number of scenarios for future water resources, and bringing together decision makers to discuss a common vision for the future.

On 5-6 February, a kick-off meeting for the project will take place at IIASA in Laxenburg, Austria. For more information on the project, see the Global Water Futures: World Water Scenarios Web page.

Water is a new focus area for IIASA, which has a long history of groundbreaking research in global issues such as climate, energy, and population. Along with the new project, IIASA researchers are conducting a number of research projects studying the nexus areas between water and other global issues, using a systems analysis approach. For example, recent work by Prof. Dr. Kabat and colleagues has shown that climate change is likely to lead to declining river flows that will have major impacts on energy systems worldwide. In September, Prof. Dr. Kabat gave a keynote lecture at the International Water Association Conference in Busan, Korea.
