The Agenda2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals crafted by the UN in September 2015 was agreed by all countries in the world. The 17 goals are universal in application and pose a challenge for both developing and developed countries. The outcome of the December 2015 COP21 conference on Climate Change in Paris will also have a major impact on international cooperation and development.

IIASA Director General and CEO, Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat, and Wolfgang Lutz, IIASA’s World Population Program Director, participated in a panel discussion at the European Studies Centre in Oxford to debate Europe’s contributions to these important international agreements: Can Europe deliver on its developmental and environmental pledges despite its challenges ranging from security, large flows of migration and mounting debts? Should Europe’s policy on development and cooperation be reconsidered? Kabat and Lutz were joined by Androulla Kaminara (European Commission) and Jan Zielonka (St Antony’s College) to discuss these crucial questions.
