Sustainable Development Solutions Network: Leadership council meeting

This September IIASA leaders will take part in a series of meetings related to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

The fifth meeting of the SDSN Leadership Council will take place on 19-20 September, 2014. The meeting will focus on the group's contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, financing for development and climate change, expanding the SDSN network, operationalizing long-term transformations to sustainable development, and education initiatives. 

IIASA Director General and CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat and IIASA Deputy Director General Nebojsa Nakicenovic will participate in the meeting as well as a number of related events surrounding the meeting (see below for more details). The SDSN was launched by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, who is an IIASA Distinguished Visiting Scholar and a member of the Alpbach-Laxenburg Group.

Kabat is a member of the SDSN Leadership Council, along with a number of global leaders including HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco;  Peter Bakker, President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development;  Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson, Global Environment Facility; Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever; and Carl-Henric Svanberg, Chairman of both BP and Volvo AB.

Advancing Evidence-Based Solutions for the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda



19-20 September
Fifth meeting of the SDSN Leadership Council
The meeting will focus on the group's contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as well as other upcoming activities and efforts.


22 September
SDSN Special Event on Financing for Development

Meeting of a small number of financing experts from international organizations, government, and the finance industry to discuss preparations for the Financing for Development Conference in Addis in July 2015. 

SDSN Luncheon for Mayors
The SDSN Thematic Group on cities is hosting a luncheon for Mayors and UN Ambassadors to discuss next steps for an urban SDG, as well as the role of cities in implementing the new SDG agenda

SDSN Special Event for World Leaders on Climate Change and Sustainable Development
The network will invite a small number of world leaders for a briefing on how to address the challenges of climate change. 

Also on 22 September, internal meetings of the SDSN Thematic Group on Forests, Oceans, Biodiversity, and Ecosystems and SDSN Thematic Group on Sustainable Cities will take place.


23 September
UN Climate Summit
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene leaders from government, business, and civil society to mobilize practical commitments in the fight against climate change. The SDSN and the Deep Decarbonization Pathway Project will play an important role in this summit.  



24-25 September
Meeting of Deep Decarbonization Pathway Project (DDPP)

Members of the DDDP consortium will meet to discuss the next steps following the launch of the DDPP report: Pathways to Deep Decarbonization. IIASA is a member of the DDPP consortium, and contributed research to the report.
