RESTORE+: Policy Engagement Meeting with Indonesia
Over the two days, the Bappenas delegation - including the Director for Food and Agriculture and the Director for the Environment - will learn more about the results of the RESTORE+ project and it's approaches, particularly in relation to food and agriculture production to support the formulation of the Government of Indonesia's National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024.
The meeting will also focus on providing a technical overview of the varying modelling approaches including the EPIC, G4M, GLOBIOM and the WaNuLCAS (provided by ICRAF) models and in planning a detailed collaboration towards finalization of technical recommendations to the RPJMN in mid-April.
During the opening of the meeting, the delegation will also meet with IIASA Director General and CEO Albert van Jaarsveld , who will give a brief introduction to IIASA and its research collaborations in Indonesia.

About RESTORE+
RESTORE+ aims to explore restoration and utilization options of tropical degraded and/or marginal land in order to ease pressure on deforestation as well as mitigating climate change. The project aspires to generate innovative methodology that combines multi-objective modelling (utilizing more than five in-house and newly developed models) with advanced big data and crowd-empowered remote sensing analyses.
Brazil and Indonesia face tremendous pressure to prioritize sustainable land use. In attempt to address this pressure, Indonesia is prioritizing agricultural expansion on degraded/marginal land. Such goal is ambitious as it has to tackle multiple objectives including food/energy security, sustainable exploration and minimizing land use conflicts. Meanwhile, Brazil has set deforestation reduction targets to 2020 and the new Forest Code includes forest restoration targets. Moreover, multinational companies with activities reaching over both countries have pledged zero deforestation supply chains.
IIASA and Indonesia
Indonesia officially became a member of IIASA in 2012 through the Indonesian National Committee for IIASA. Since joining IIASA, Indonesian researchers have started collaborating with IIASA researchers on projects focused on sustainable land management, the changing energy landscape, increasing Indonesia’s resilience
to natural disasters, and improving air quality. Beyond continuing these new research collaborations, there is significant opportunity to grow the relationship between IIASA and Indonesia’s scholarly community.
Opportunities for additional collaborations including developing bespoke Indonesian version of IIASA global models, conducting international assessments in areas of Indonesian strategic interests, partnering with Indonesian institutions to win international research grants, and contributing to Indonesian science diplomacy. Moreover, IIASA hosted a session on applied systems analysis as part of the ninth ASEAN Science and Technology Week in Indonesia in 2014.
