The lecture is entitled “Global Transitions and the Arctic: A Systems Science Approach," and will focus on IIASA's new Arctic Futures Initiative, which brings a holistic systems science approach to the questions facing the Arctic region. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with participants in the summer school.

The 2014 Potsdam Summer School has the theme, “Arctic in the Anthropocene." It will be jointly conducted by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and the University of Potsdam. Experts, stakeholders, and guest lecturers from national and international institutes and organizations will contribute high level knowledge to the Summer School program. IIASA works closely with researchers and leaders of these institutes.

This two-week interdisciplinary and interactive event will launch the Potsdam Summer School series to be held annually in Potsdam, Germany. The goal is to bring together early-career scientists and young professionals from research departments, governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations, as well as the private sector from all around the world. The summer school will provide a unique opportunity for students and speakers to foster and enhance international cooperation and exchange of ideas.
