Energy Transition Week 2021

IIASA scientists will participate as keynote speakers and panelists at the upcoming virtual Energy Transition Week 2021 hosted and organized by the NTNU Energy Transition Initiative.

The NTNU Energy Transition Initiative delivers world leading research on energy transition strategies, to achieve the ambitions of the Paris Agreement in an efficient and realistic way. The platform allows for a meeting point to debate challenges and solutions for the transition to a future sustainable energy system. 

The theme of this year’s Energy Transition Conference is the fair, just and sustainable transition of society under a range of challenges.

On track to meet the Paris Agreement? 

Keywan Riahi, Program Director of IIASA’s Energy, Climate, and Environment Program, will be delivering a keynote presentation to shed light on what current policies are going to deliver in support of the goals of the Paris Agreement. With COP26 coming up in Glasgow revisiting the achievements so far and understanding the remaining challenges ahead is important.

The color of hope is green

Volker Krey, Research Group Leader of the Integrated Assessment & Climate Change Group who is also an Adjunct Professor at NTNU, serves as a panelist on the session on the European Green Deal and stimulus packages for economic recovery following the COVID19 pandemic. The European Green Deal, climate action in China and the US, stimulus packages for economic recovery following the global pandemic – several activities have the potential to make the energy transition a global effort. 

Expert Workshop on Negative emissions and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)

Florian Kraxner, Research Group Leader of the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services Group, will contribute to the Expert Workshop with a presentation on the role of afforestation and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) to global mitigation efforts. Land-based negative emission technologies are ingredients in most pathways meeting the obligations in the Paris agreement. This gives rise to a number of challenges related to land use and social aspects which require a sensitive consideration of SDGs on the way to develop optimal nature-climate solutions.
