ALPS International Symposium

Future strategy towards carbon neutral society was the focus of the ALternative Pathways toward Sustainable development and climate stabilization (ALPS) symposium

The Systems Analysis Group at RITE annually organizes a high-level symposium with esteemed international keynote presenters. IIASA's Keywan Riahi presented findings on the rapid global transformation towards net zero CO2 emissions.

The presentation focused on transformation pathways consistent with the long-term goal of the UN Paris Agreement to hold warming well below 2°C and pursue limiting it to 1.5°C.

RITE is leading a research collaboration on ALternative Pathways toward Sustainable development and climate stabilization (ALPS), which is sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan. The research project aims to contribute to planning of the international framework and strategy for green growth and investigates long-term responses to climate change risks. The study includes analyses of future low energy demand scenarios with potential social changes to be induced by recent development of IoT and sharing economy, which may reduce energy demand. The ECE program at IIASA is a collaborator on this research effort.
