IIASA and Beijing Normal University are co-organizing a symposium titled, The International Symposium on Polycrises and Systemic risks: The need for an integrative approach for assessment and governance. The event will take place in Beijing, China from 9 to 10 May 2024. IIASA Interim Deputy Director General for Science, Wolfgang Lutz, and IIASA Research Group Leader, Reinhard Mechler, will participate in the event to bring together different communities of risk and hazard research, explore their commonalities, and discuss improved policy options for dealing more effectively with systemic risks in the future.

Climate services play a pivotal role in the European Union's efforts to propel climate action,
strengthen resilience, and foster a data-driven economy. The 2015 European research and
innovation roadmap exemplified this commitment by fostering the co-development of climate
services and enabling their market growth, aligned with the objectives of the EU Green Deal.
Climateurope2, funded by EU Horizon Europe, is a coordination and supporting action dedicated
to promoting the use of trustworthy climate services, enhancing the climate service community,
and fostering grassroots standardisation

With the climate crisis already heavily affecting lives and livelihoods across the globe, regions and communities, in addition to countries, are increasingly called upon to better plan for climate risks as well as to implement options that build resilience. SYRR in several EU funded projects is developing guidance for enhanced climate risk assessment as well as for efforts to build climate resilience in Europe.

Climate impacts in one location that propagate to other locations through trade and value chains, development and security policies, and financial systems, may have disrupting effects similar to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war on Ukraine. These effects are not easily represented in traditional analysis frameworks and need to be embedded in the wider context of social vulnerability and climate change. The conference aims to bring together scientists across disciplines that work on approaches to better understand and respond/adapt to cross-border climate impacts and risks. The conference also seeks to identify knowledge gaps and directions for future research. Research presented in the conference will highlight what needs arise from a consideration of cross-border climate impacts, how to design research that is actionable for decision-making or how to improve the monitoring of risks.

A team of researchers from IIASA’s Systemic Risk and Resilience (Advancing Systems Analysis Program) is primed to present their work at the highly anticipated 7th "Adaptation Futures" conference at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in Canada this October. Adaptation Futures is the premier international conference devoted entirely to climate change adaptation. It brings together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, industry representatives, and communicators to present their work in adaptation, learn from others, and establish networks. The conference provides a vibrant platform for IIASA researchers to spotlight their cutting-edge work on managing systemic risks and increasing resilience against climate impacts.

Climate change is manifested by pronounced negative impacts on the society and ecosystems.
Increasing heat extremes, heavy precipitation events, droughts and other hazards, put a strain on the
health systems, economies, and natural environments of Europe. Therefore, understanding and
projecting future hydro-meteorological variability and occurrence of extremes, as well as their impacts
are key scientific challenges crucial to the development and implementation of sustainable management
practices and policies.

As a key issue for COP27, with climate impacts proliferating around the world and affecting the most vulnerable, the integration of the Loss&Damage policy domain into broader climate policy requires further attention. The brief lays out a framework that shows how gaps with regard to adaptation, protection and response need further attention and can be integrated into a climate policy framework for reducing, addressing and responding to losses and damages. When attending to gaps, attention is to be spent on scaling up response mechanisms and interventions that have proven to be effective, are locally led, and meet the specific needs of the communities they support.
