China has promised to become carbon neutral before 2060 and has coupled this ambitious target with stringent limitations on industrial water use by 2030. An international team of IIASA researchers and Chinese colleagues explored the effects of simultaneously pursuing these goals.

IIASA is participating in the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) conference Science Advice Under Pressure in Brussels. This participation includes eminent speakers from the IIASA network as well as a policy simulation that explores international negotiations through an immersive role-play experience highlighting the roles of science advice.

Climate change and population growth will challenge water security in Israel. Adapting to future water security challenges requires policymakers to act today. The Water Futures and Solutions for Israel project (WFaS-Israel) aims to assess water scarcity in Israel under different plausible future scenarios. Each scenario combines different climatic trajectories with diverse socio-economic and spatial planning storylines.

IIASA is co-organizing a policy simulation at a satellite event of the INGSA2021 conference in Montreal. This event will provide participants with an opportunity to explore international science diplomacy through an immersive role-play experience and a virtual simulation proposed by the Centre for Systems Solutions (CRS).
Research Project
In fairSTREAM, IIASA researchers aim to understand and reconcile issues of fairness. This is a key aspect for managing risks in nexus issues, such as the food-water-biodiversity nexus, where conflicting views on procedural and outcome fairness often remain unresolved and jeopardize finding viable solutions. Addressing these issues is a major challenge that requires the integration of multiple sources of knowledge and the cooperation of many different societal actors.

This kick-off event serves to introduce the Strategic Initiatives project FairSTREAM to IIASA colleagues and associates, as well as to start the conversation on one concrete topic at the heart of FairSTREAM work: stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production at IIASA. The project is an in-house collaboration by the Equity and Justice (EQU), Water Security (WAT), and Biodiversity, Ecology, & Conservation (BEC) IIASA Research Groups to advance trans-disciplinary research and upscaling via agent-based modelling at the food-water-biodiversity nexus.
