Ian McCallum and Steffen Fritz from the Novel Data Ecosystems for Sustainability Research Group will be attending the international scientific workshop 'The future of land monitoring – technologies, trends, transparency?' within the Transparent Monitoring project, which aims to shed light on ongoing developments and trends, that are likely to shape transparent monitoring approaches in the future.

The 39^th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE’39) is one of the longest-standing conferences of its kind. This year the focus of ISRSE’39 is sustainability with the theme ‘From Human needs to SDGs’. ISRSE’30 brings together public and private section organizations with scientists in the field of Earth observation, information services and environmental applications, with a strong emphasis on practical solutions and societal outcomes at all scales from local to global.

This talk will present the results from the ADAPT-UHI project, funded by the Austrian Climate Research Program, in which urban climate modelling was used to assess different climate adaptation and mitigation options in three small- to medium-sized cities in Austria: Klagenfurt, Mödling and Salzburg including a social cost benefit analysis. Other outputs included tailored recommendations for urban planning and an Urban Heat Island Risk map for Austria. More recently, the Urban ReLeaf project, funded by Horizon Europe, aims to involve citizen science and different types of sensors in urban greening solutions across six cities in Europe. Although the project only started at the beginning of 2023, a brief overview of the goals and current activities will be highlighted. The talk will last around 45 minutes followed by questions and a discussion for another 45 minutes.

The United Nations (UN) World Data Forum (WDF) is an event organized by the UN Statistics Division since 2017 to mobilize financial and political support for data, stimulate data innovation and foster partnerships around data to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Research Group Leader Sebastian Poledna participated in the 28th International Conference on Computing in Economics and Finance and presented joint work with the Bank of Canada on a next-generation agent-based model for Canada.

Land & Carbon Lab’s 2023 Summit is a global conference for policy makers and practitioners harnessing geospatial data and monitoring to advance land sustainability solutions for this decade’s climate, nature, and development goals. 

This workshop aims to bring together experts in the field of biodiversity monitoring, data collection, data integration and modeling to discuss and explore the existing, emerging, and potential future workflows for generating Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and how they can be implemented at the European scale.
