Workshop on resilience and disruptive changes

Economics of disruptive changes (EDC) is one of the main research areas of the Economic Frontiers (EF) Program of IIASA. The EDC theme embraces economic behaviors under the risk of large disruptive (regime changing) shocks, including climate tipping points, eco-system breakdown, pandemic shocks, and disruptive technological or political changes. The hallmark of the research undertaken under the auspices of the EDC theme is that it studies the nexus of pre-shock and post-shock behaviors within a coherent framework. In that respect the EDC group developed a transformation approach of multi-stage optimal control models with random switching time to age-structured optimal control models, which allows to consider the sequential problem in a simultaneous optimization (see Wrzaczek, Kuhn and Frankovic, JOTA 184, 1065-1082). The workshop and the EDC group are interested in mathematical developments as well as in modeling and empirical applications.

The workshop is planned to enable a personal discussion and will take place (in a hybrid mode) on 22^nd and 23^rd of September 2022 at IIASA in Laxenburg, Austria.
