IDRiM2021 will celebrate 12 years since the official establishment of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM) in 2009, and 20 years since our founding members first discussed integrated disaster risk management at the first IIASA-DPRI Annual Forum on Integrated Disaster Risk Management in 2001. Since 2009, IDRiM conferences have been hosted annually in various countries around the world, showcasing research, implementation case studies, and addressing some of the most pressing problems in the field. This year, IDRiM2021 will be held in an online format on 22-24 September 2021.

IDRiM2021 takes on a special meaning as it looks back at two decades of applied and theoretical research on IDRiM. The event focuses on how IDRiM has contributed to disaster risk reduction (DRR) and advanced from other disciplinary fields and initiatives that have not been traditionally included in the DRR discourse (e.g. sustainable futures, conscious businesses and new economics paradigms, green construction, life cycle assessment and planning, environmental protection including reducing consumption and waste, simple living, green cities, disaster history, anthropology, and cultural studies, and many more).

IIASA Emeritus Scholar JoAnne Bayer from the Equity and Justice (EQU) Research Group, as one of the founding members of the IDRiM Society, will deliver a keynote speech entitled "Looking back and looking forward."

Additionally, Senior Research Scholar Stefan Hochrainer-Stigler from the Systemic Risk and Resilience (SYRR) Research Group was invited as a keynote speaker to discuss how individual, compound and systemic risks can be tackled in an integrated manner through a "Systemic Risk and Dependencies" perspective. Furthermore, a special session on "New Advances in Measuring, Modelling and Managing Systemic Risks" and a special session "Empirical Tested Resilience Approaches" were jointly organised by Stefan Hochrainer-Stigler and Adriana Keating (SYRR).

Several other IIASA researchers will be serve as speakers and discussants at this year's virtual event.

The IDRiM Society and IIASA

The IDRiM Society and its Journal (IDRiM Journal) were officially launched on October 15, 2009 in Kyoto, Japan, at the 9th IIASA-DPRI Forum on Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM Forum). The formation of the IDRiM Society was based on a long history of collaboration between the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University and IIASA. The decision to set up the IDRiM Society was based on the success of a series of nine IIASA-DPRI Forums on Integrated Disaster Risk Management organised by DPRI and IIASA.

The founding members of the IDRiM Society include Dr. Joanne Bayer (IIASA), Dr. Reinhard Mechler (IIASA), Prof. Norio Okada (DPRI), Dr. Aniello Amendola (IIASA), Dr. Peijun Shi (Beijing Normal University), Prof. Hirokazu Tatano (DPRI), Dr. Mohsen Ghafory-Ashtiani (International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology), and Dr. Ana Maria Cruz (DPRI).

Japan is one of the founding members of IIASA and research collaborations between IIASA and Japan have been highly productive since the Institute was founded in 1972.
