2021 ADBI-ADB-IIASA Workshop on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Technologies and Governance in Urban Development

Unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) continues to be a global challenge that affects the health and well-being of many. Achieving the SDG global targets on safe drinking water and sanitation by 2030 will require a four-fold increase in the current rate of progress. The UN has launched the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework in 2020, aiming to deliver fast results at an increased scale. There is a clear need to better understand what solutions (e.g., financial, governance, technology) have been implemented in different urban contexts to pinpoint what progress has been achieved, where efforts are still lacking, and what types of programs work.

The workshop is organised by the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), in close collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Wageningen University and Research (WUR) and University of Massachusetts Boston. It will feature selected papers from the special issue on 'WASH Technologies and Governance in Urban Development' in the Journal of Environment Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science.
