IIASA Water Program Director Yoshihide Wada has been invited as a key speaker at the First G20 Agricultural Deputies meeting - Food and Water - held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 26-27 January 2020.

The pre-meeting will bring together water and agricultural experts from IIASA, the OECD, the World Bank, G20 ministers as well as the Saudi secretariat, to discuss their experiences and best practices to draft the contents of the report for the G20 Action Plan on Water. This will be presented to the Heads of the G20 States at the Leaders’ Summit in Riyadh on 21–22 November 2020.

Yoshihide Wada’s  presentation will focus on Innovation and Hydro informatics for Water Management.

Saudi Arabia has assumed the 2020 G20 Presidency on 1 December 2019 leading up to the Leaders’ Summit in Riyadh on 21-22 November 2020. 

The Saudi G20 Presidency - “Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century for All” - will focus on three key aims: " Empowering People, by creating the conditions in which all people —especially women and young people—can live, work and thrive; Safeguarding the Planet, by fostering collective efforts on food and water security, climate, energy and environment; Shaping New Frontiers, by adopting long-term, bold strategies to share the benefits of innovation and technological advancement."

IIASA conducts its research in collaboration with large international research networks in its member countries, twelve of which are from the G20: Brazil, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russian Federation, South Africa, South Korea, United Kingdom, and the United States.

About the G20

The G20 gathers the leaders of the largest economies of the world to discuss financial and socioeconomic issues". It is made up of 19 countries and the European Union. The 19 countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US. The G20 is the forum for international economic cooperation. 

"Originated in 1999 at the level of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, the G20 gathered for high-level discussions on macro-financial issues. In the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis, the G20 was elevated to include the leaders of member countries. The first G20 Leaders’ Summit took place in Washington D.C. in November 2008. Consequently, the G20 agenda expanded beyond macro-financial issues, to include socio-economic and development issues.
