The digital ALPTREES conference displays a platform for citizens, experts, young adults, and stakeholders to share their experiences and views on non-native trees and climate change in the Alpine region, as well as other related topics for oral or poster presentations and workshops.

The digital conference on the sustainable use and management of non-native trees in urban, peri-urban, and forest ecosystems in the Alpine region is organized by the Interreg ALPTREES Project of which IIASA is a partner.

The ALPTREES project is a transnational cooperation for sustainable use and management of non-native trees in urban, peri-urban and forest ecosystems in the Alpine Space. It aims to develop a transnational strategy for the responsible use and management of non-native trees in the Alpine Space with the help of an integrated decision support system.

The online conference includes keynote presentations, poster sessions, and a policy workshop to develop a strategy for the sustainable use of non-native trees.

The sessions focus on risks of invasive trees (session 1) and management of non-native trees (session 2). The third session offers group discussions and activities for citizens under the age of 18.

ALPTREES - Sustainable use and management of non native trees in the alpine region

The overall objective of the ALPTREES project is to improve knowledge-based decision-making on the responsible use and management of non-native trees in the Alpine Space by developing a transnational strategy on non-native trees. This strategy will evaluate the tradeoffs between promoting climate change adaptation through planting adapted non-native trees while preserving and enhancing the biodiversity, ecosystem services and cultural resources of native forests. The IIASA Agriculture, Forestry and Ecosystem Services (AFE) Research Group is one of the main research partners of the project. The research group’s role in the project is to model future potential and risks for non-native trees under different climate change scenarios for the Alpine Space, particularly for the forest and peri-urban region.
