The Great Policy Debate: National Interests vs. Global Goals

IIASA, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters are co-organizing a parallel session at the Scientific Advice Mechanism to the European Commission Conference that explores how to effectively reconcile global coordination with national priorities in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

Partnering for progress: Strengthening science and policy through multilateral collaboration for tomorrow

IIASA, together with the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC), will host a side event at the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) to the European Commission Conference 2025. This event will explore the expanding role of collaborative frameworks in shaping evidence-based policies, with contributions from esteemed experts in government and leading research institutions.

The world’s wealthiest 10% caused two thirds of global warming since 1990

Wealthy individuals have a higher carbon footprint. A new study published in Nature Climate Change quantifies the climate outcomes of these inequalities. It finds that the world’s wealthiest 10% are responsible for two thirds of observed global warming since 1990 and the resulting increases in climate extremes such as heatwaves and droughts.

IIASA receives 2025 Group on Earth Observations Sustainable Development Goals Award

IIASA and partners received the award for pioneering the use of citizen science and AI to address national data gaps on marine litter in Ghana, the first country to integrate such data into its official statistics and to monitor and use it for monitoring and reporting on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
