Biography
Setu Pelz joined IIASA in 2022 as a research scholar in the Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions (TISS) Research Group of the Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program. He works on the analysis and modeling of energy poverty, access, demand, and transitions, with a particular focus on regions of the Global South and vulnerable communities globally.Prior to joining IIASA, Pelz pursued his PhD with the Department of Energy and Environmental Management at Europa Universitat Flensburg, Germany. During this time, he also participated in the 2020 IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) during which he received the Peccei Award for his study: Impacts of grid electricity access on rural non-farm entrepreneurship and employment in Ethiopia and Nigeria.
Pelz continues to collaborate with the Off-grid Systems Research Unit at the Reiner Lemoine Institut, Germany, as well as the Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy at Johns Hopkins University, USA. His research interests include energy access, just transitions, and sustainable development.
