Biography

Esther Boere is an agricultural economist in the Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program. Her research focuses on modeling and analyzing driving factors of land use change and their consequences on the agricultural and forestry sectors at a regional and global scale using the Global Biosphere Management Model (GLOBIOM). Topics of application in her work include the effects of gradual climate change and extreme weather events at the European and global scale, and the development of regional- and country-level impact assessment modeling. She has developed country-specific versions of GLOBIOM for Ethiopia and Indonesia tailored to analyzing respectively smallholder-specific policies aimed at reducing poverty and food insecurity; and the trade-offs between intensification, conservation and restoration policies on land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), as well as the agriculture and forestry sectors.

Boere received her PhD from Wageningen University in The Netherlands. Focusing on land use changes and accounting for the role of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy-reform, she developed econometric (panel data and duration) and mathematical programming models.
